Visual Anthropology

Kolding Tråden is a visual anthropology project developed throughout 2025–2026 and promoted by Nicolai Kultur Kolding. Through photography and film, the project explores and begins to map Kolding’s diverse crafting communities, looking at the people, spaces, and relationships that shape them.

As the research unfolded, it became increasingly apparent that, beyond the differences between painting, knitting, sewing, and other forms of craft, these practices were also ways of creating spaces for connection, participation, and belonging. The act of making became a means of building relationships, establishing a sense of ownership, and creating meaningful connections between people and place. These encounters and observations were brought together in a publication documenting seven communities, differing in age, activities, and forms of craft. Combining photography, text, and the voices of participants, the book became both an archive of the research and a visual interpretation of the communities encountered.

The project developed into a day event "Kolding Tråden" with a conference moderated by Clement Kjersgaard, having a topic and discussion around volunteering, community, and the role and value of collective spaces in contemporary society.
